Ingredients
For the Dough:
- 1 cup plain flour
- 1 cup water
- 1/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
- 1 large egg
For the Coating:
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon powder
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough Base: In a pan, combine the water, unsalted butter, salt, and sugar. Bring this mixture to a boil over high heat, then lower the heat and gradually add in the flour, stirring constantly until a cohesive dough forms. Remove the pan from the heat.
- Cool and Mix Dough: Transfer the dough to a large mixing bowl and let it cool for 4-5 minutes. Once slightly cooled, add the vanilla essence and egg. Use an electric hand mixer to blend until you have a smooth, uniform dough.
- Pipe the Churros: Spoon the dough into a piping bag (or zip-top bag with the corner cut off). Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) and spray the basket with nonstick spray. Carefully pipe bite-sized churros into the basket, spacing them apart. Alternatively, drop small spoonfuls of dough for a rustic shape.
- Cook the Churros: Lightly brush or spray the tops of the churros with butter or cooking spray. Air fry for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown and puffed. Cook in batches for best results.
- Coat with Cinnamon Sugar: In a shallow bowl, mix together the white sugar and cinnamon. While churros are still hot, transfer them into the cinnamon sugar and toss to coat. For extra stickiness, brush lightly with melted butter or spritz with water before rolling in the mixture.
- Serve and Enjoy: Serve the churro bites warm, ideally with chocolate syrup, honey, or Nutella for dipping. These are best enjoyed fresh!
Notes
- Don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket; cooking in batches ensures even crispness.
- Let dough cool before adding the egg to avoid scrambling.
- Swap vanilla for almond extract for a different flavor accent.
- If a piping bag isn’t available, use a zip-top bag with a cut corner.
- Best eaten fresh but can be reheated in the air fryer for a few minutes.
