Ingredients
Onion Rings
- 1 large sweet onion
Batter and Coating
- ½ cup flour (gluten-free or all purpose)
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ¼ tsp paprika
- 1 ¼ tsp salt (divided)
- 1 large egg
- ⅓ cup milk (cashew or almond milk)
- 1 ½ cups Panko bread crumbs (gluten-free)
- 2 Tbsp oil
Instructions
- Slice the Onion: Trim the ends from the onion and remove the outer peel. Slice the onion into rings approximately ½-inch thick to ensure even cooking and optimal crispiness.
- Coat the Onions: Prepare three separate shallow bowls. In Bowl 1, combine flour, garlic powder, paprika, and ¾ teaspoon salt, whisking until well blended. In Bowl 2, whisk the egg and milk together, then stir in about ⅓ cup of the flour mixture from Bowl 1 until smooth. In Bowl 3, mix the Panko bread crumbs with the remaining ½ teaspoon salt and oil, tossing until the crumbs are evenly coated. Dip each onion ring first into the flour mixture, then into the egg wash, and finally coat thoroughly with the bread crumb mixture. Place the coated rings on a plate until ready to air fry.
- Cook in the Air Fryer: Preheat the air fryer to 360°F for at least 3 minutes. Arrange the onion rings in a single layer, avoiding overlap; nest smaller rings inside larger ones to maximize space. Air fry for 6-8 minutes, flipping halfway through to ensure even crisping. Repeat with remaining rings. Keep cooked rings warm by placing them on a parchment-lined baking sheet in an oven set at 250°F if cooking in batches.
- Serve: Serve the crispy onion rings immediately paired with your favorite dipping sauce like ketchup for a delightful snack or side dish.
Notes
- Use gluten-free flour and Panko for a gluten-free option.
- Cashew or almond milk works well as a dairy substitute for a vegan or lactose-free variation (use a flax egg instead of the egg for full vegan compliance).
- Ensure onion rings are spaced properly in the air fryer to allow for crispiness.
- If you prefer extra-crispy rings, double coat by repeating the dredging process before air frying.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container and reheat in the air fryer for a few minutes to restore crispness.
