Topped with a sweet apple cider glaze, they offer the perfect balance of fruity freshness and sugary caramelized goodness. Perfectly bite-sized and baked instead of fried, these treats make for a shareable snack or dessert that’s easy to prepare and irresistibly delicious.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 10 servings (approximately 30 bites)

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • Nonstick cooking spray, for greasing
  • 1 ½ cups all purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp kosher salt
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup no-sugar added applesauce
  • 1 ½ cups peeled and finely diced Honeycrisp apples (about 2 medium apples)

Glaze

  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • ⅓ cup plus 2 TBSP apple cider or apple juice

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and generously spray a baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, kosher salt, and cinnamon until well combined, creating the flavorful base for the fritters.
  3. Combine Wet Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, add melted butter and whisk in granulated sugar until smooth. Beat in the egg until fully incorporated, then stir in vanilla extract and no-sugar added applesauce, combining all the wet ingredients evenly.
  4. Form Batter and Add Apples: Gradually add the dry flour mixture to the wet ingredients, stirring until well blended. Gently fold in the finely diced peeled Honeycrisp apples to distribute the fruit throughout the batter.
  5. Shape and Bake: Using a tablespoon, scoop mounds of batter spaced a few inches apart onto the prepared baking sheet. Place in the oven and bake for 10 minutes to cook through and lightly brown.
  6. Prepare Broiler and Glaze: Once baked, remove fritters from the oven and turn your oven broiler on high. In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar and apple cider/apple juice until the glaze is thin and smooth.
  7. Glaze and Broil: Brush a generous amount of glaze over each fritter, letting it drip down the sides. Return the baking sheet to the oven and broil the fritters for 2-4 minutes, carefully rotating the pan every minute to ensure even caramelization and prevent burning. Watch closely to avoid blackening.
  8. Final Glaze and Set: Remove the fritters from the oven, then brush the remaining glaze evenly over the tops. Allow the fritters to rest on the baking sheet for about 15 minutes until the glaze hardens and sets beautifully.

Notes

  • Use Honeycrisp apples for the best texture and sweet-tart flavor, but Granny Smith or Fuji can be substituted.
  • Make sure the glaze is thin to allow it to caramelize properly under the broiler without burning.
  • Watch the fritters carefully while broiling, as they can quickly burn if left unattended.
  • Let the fritters cool completely after glazing so the glaze hardens nicely before serving.
  • These bites are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
