Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 1 1/2 pound ground beef (85% lean)
- 1 medium onion (finely chopped)
- 1 large egg
- 1 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 1 cup dry bread crumbs
- 1-2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
Instructions
- Prepare the mixture: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, finely chopped onion, egg, salt, ground black pepper, and red pepper flakes. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated to ensure even seasoning and flavor.
- Form the cutlets: Using a 3-tablespoon scoop, portion the meat mixture and shape each portion into oval patties. Dip each patty into dry bread crumbs, coating them evenly on all sides to form a crispy outer layer when cooked.
- Preheat skillet and add fats: Place a large skillet on medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil and 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter. Depending on your skillet’s size, you can add an additional tablespoon of oil to prevent sticking and achieve even browning.
- Cook the cutlets: Place the breaded cutlets in the skillet and sauté them covered with a lid. Cook for about 5 minutes on each side until they develop a golden brown crust and are cooked through. Cooking with the lid on helps retain moisture inside the cutlets.
- Check for doneness: To ensure the cutlets are properly cooked inside, cut one with a knife. The interior should be juicy without any visible blood, indicating safe and tender cook-through.
- Serve and enjoy: Remove the cutlets from the skillet and serve hot as a main dish accompanied by your choice of sides or condiments.
Notes
- Using beef with 85% lean content helps maintain juiciness without excess fat.
- For added flavor, finely grated onions can be used instead of chopped onion.
- Adjust the red pepper flakes according to your preferred spice level or omit for milder taste.
- If desired, the cutlets can be baked at 375°F (190°C) for about 20 minutes as a healthier alternative to frying.
- Leftover cutlets store well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and can be reheated in a skillet or oven.
