Ingredients
Chicken Marinade
- 1 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts or thighs, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons oil (or mayonnaise)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Vegetables and Sauces
- 1 tablespoon oil
- 1 onion, sliced
- 1 bell pepper, sliced
- 1/2 tablespoon soy sauce (optional; use gluten-free or tamari for gluten-free option)
- 1/2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (optional; use gluten-free for gluten-free option)
Assembly
- 4 slices provolone cheese
- 4 hoagie buns/rolls, cut in half (optionally toasted; use gluten-free for gluten-free option)
Instructions
- Marinate the Chicken: In a bowl, combine thinly sliced chicken with 2 tablespoons oil or mayonnaise, garlic powder, oregano, cayenne pepper (if using), salt, and black pepper. Stir to coat thoroughly and let the mixture marinate for at least 20 minutes, or up to overnight for deeper flavor.
- Sauté Onions and Peppers: Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sliced onions and bell peppers, cooking until they become tender and start to caramelize, about 5 minutes. Remove from skillet and set aside.
- Cook the Chicken: In the same skillet, add the marinated chicken and cook over medium-high heat for 5 to 8 minutes until it is fully cooked and slightly browned. Stir occasionally to ensure even cooking.
- Add Sauces and Vegetables: Mix in the soy sauce and Worcestershire sauce (if using), then return the cooked onions and peppers to the skillet. Stir to combine everything evenly.
- Melt the Cheese: Place a slice of provolone cheese on top of the chicken and vegetable mixture in the skillet. Cover the skillet loosely and let the cheese melt for about 2 to 3 minutes.
- Assemble the Sandwiches: Divide the cheesy chicken and vegetable mixture evenly among the hoagie buns or rolls. Optionally, toast the buns before assembling. Serve immediately and enjoy your chicken cheesesteak sandwiches!
Notes
- Marinate chicken longer for stronger flavor, up to overnight.
- Use gluten-free soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and buns to make sandwich gluten-free.
- Optional cayenne pepper adds heat; omit if you prefer mild flavor.
- Toasting buns adds a nice texture contrast.
- Chicken thighs can be used as a juicier alternative to breasts.
