This Chocolate Covered Pretzels recipe offers a delightful combination of salty pretzels dipped in smooth, colorful candy melts. Perfect for Valentine’s Day or any festive occasion, these treats are decorated with heart sprinkles for an extra charming touch. The recipe is simple, fun, and customizable with various candy coating colors.

  • Total Time: 50 minutes (including drying time)
  • Yield: 24 pretzel rods

Ingredients

Candy Coatings

  • Light cocoa candy melts (milk chocolate morsels or chocolate-flavored almond bark) – 1 cup
  • White candy melts (white chocolate morsels or vanilla almond bark) – 1 cup
  • Pink candy melts – 1 cup
  • Red candy melts – 1 cup

Toppings

  • Valentine’s Day Sprinkle Set – 1/2 cup
  • Heart sprinkles – 1/4 cup

Other

  • Pretzel rods – 24 rods
  • Vegetable shortening or coconut oil (optional, to thin candy melts) – 2 teaspoons

Instructions

  1. Melt the Candy Coating: Melt the candy melts according to package directions, taking care not to overheat. Overheating can thicken the candy coating. If it becomes too thick, gently stir in up to 2 teaspoons of vegetable shortening or coconut oil to thin it. Avoid adding any other liquids to prevent seizing.
  2. Dip the Pretzel Rods: Dip each pretzel rod so that about two-thirds is covered in the melted candy coating. Shake gently to remove any excess coating.
  3. Apply Sprinkles: Immediately after dipping, while the candy coating is still wet, sprinkle the pretzels with Valentine’s Day sprinkles or place larger individual heart sprinkles for best results, ensuring an even coating by rotating the rods.
  4. Set on Wax Paper: Place each pretzel rod on waxed paper or a cooling rack to set. Waxed paper helps in easy removal after drying.
  5. Drizzle Additional Colors: Once the initial candy coating has fully set, drizzle additional colored candy melts over the pretzels using a spoon or fork. Before the drizzle sets, gently transfer the pretzels to clean wax paper to avoid smudging.
  6. Dry Completely: Let the pretzels dry completely at room temperature before packaging or serving to ensure the coatings harden properly.

Notes

  • Do not overheat candy melts as this will make them difficult to work with.
  • If candy melts become too thick after melting, add a small amount of vegetable shortening or coconut oil to thin.
  • Avoid adding water or other liquids to the candy melts to prevent seizing.
  • Using waxed paper helps to easily remove the pretzels once the coating is set.
  • Larger sprinkles are easier to place individually on the pretzels for better decoration.
  • Allow the coatings to set fully between dipping and drizzling for clean layers.
