Ingredients
Pretzel Dough
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 1 packet active dry yeast (about 2 1/4 teaspoons)
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
For boiling
- 1 tablespoon baking soda
Cinnamon Sugar Coating
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
Instructions
- Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let the mixture sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy—this signals the yeast is active and ready to use.
- Prepare and Knead the Dough: In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Pour in the frothy yeast mixture and 2 tablespoons melted butter, stirring until a shaggy dough forms. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Let the Dough Rise: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and set aside to rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Preheat the Oven: Heat your oven to 425°F (220°C) to ensure it’s ready for baking as soon as the dough is shaped.
- Shape the Pretzel Sticks: Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal portions. Roll each into a rope about 10-12 inches long, then cut each rope into 4-inch sticks, making about 16 pieces in total.
- Boil the Pretzel Sticks: Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add the baking soda. Working in batches, carefully drop the pretzel sticks into the boiling water for 30 seconds. Use a slotted spoon to transfer them to a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Bake the Pretzel Sticks: Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown. Watch closely to avoid over-baking.
- Add Cinnamon Sugar Coating: In a small bowl, mix the 1/2 cup sugar and 1 tablespoon cinnamon. While the pretzel sticks are still warm, brush them with 4 tablespoons melted butter and immediately roll them in the cinnamon-sugar mixture until fully coated.
- Cool and Serve: Let the pretzel sticks cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm for the ultimate treat!
Notes
- This recipe yields about 16 pretzel sticks and takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes from start to finish, including rising and baking time.
- Pretzel sticks are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
- Reheat leftovers in a 350°F (175°C) oven for about 5 minutes to revive their texture.
