This Baked Ravioli recipe is a convenient and delicious Italian-inspired dish perfect for busy weeknights. Using frozen cheese ravioli layered with marinara sauce, mozzarella, Parmesan, and aromatic herbs, it offers a flavorful alternative to lasagna with minimal prep. The baked layers meld together to create a comforting meal that is ready in just about an hour.

  • Total Time: 1 hour
  • Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 jar (24 ounces) marinara sauce
  • 1 bag (25 ounces) frozen cheese ravioli (do not thaw)
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil, divided
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano, divided
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes, divided (optional)

Optional Garnish

  • Chopped fresh parsley

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Dish: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (176 degrees C). Lightly coat a large baking dish, such as a 9×13-inch rectangular dish or a large circular dish, with nonstick cooking spray or olive oil to prevent sticking.
  2. Layer Sauce and Ravioli: Spread a thin, even layer of marinara sauce on the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Arrange a single layer of frozen cheese ravioli over the sauce without thawing. Spoon more marinara sauce evenly over the ravioli.
  3. Add Cheese and Herbs: Sprinkle half of the shredded mozzarella cheese and grated Parmesan over the sauce layer. Then evenly sprinkle half of the dried basil, half of the dried oregano, and half of the red pepper flakes if using.
  4. Repeat Layers: Repeat the layering process by adding the remaining marinara sauce, ravioli, mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, dried basil, oregano, and red pepper flakes to create a second layer.
  5. Bake: Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. After that, remove the foil and continue baking uncovered for an additional 15 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and lightly golden. For an extra golden finish, optionally broil on high for 30 to 90 seconds—watch closely to avoid burning.
  6. Garnish and Serve: Allow the baked ravioli to cool for a few minutes. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired, then serve warm for a comforting meal.

Notes

  • Do not thaw the ravioli before baking to prevent them from becoming soggy.
  • Use a nonstick or well-oiled baking dish to ensure easy serving and cleanup.
  • Broiling is optional but adds a nice golden crust to the cheese topping—watch carefully while broiling to avoid burning.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven or microwave.
  • For a spicier kick, increase the amount of red pepper flakes to taste.
