Make creamy, cheesy copycat Ruth’s Chris Potatoes au Gratin at home with this easy slow cooker recipe. This steakhouse-style side dish features layers of thinly sliced russet potatoes, onions, and a rich blend of cheddar and Parmesan cheeses, all cooked slowly to tender perfection. Ideal for holidays or comforting weeknight dinners.

  • Total Time: 4 hours 10 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

Vegetables

  • 5 large russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced

Dairy & Cheese

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
  • ½ cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened

Seasonings

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt, to taste
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Crockpot: Grease the inside of your crockpot with 2 tablespoons of softened butter or nonstick spray to prevent sticking and add richness.
  2. Layer Potatoes and Onions: Place a layer of thinly sliced russet potatoes at the bottom of the crockpot. Add a thin layer of sliced onions on top. Lightly season the layer with salt and black pepper to taste.
  3. Pour Cream Mixture: In a small bowl, mix the heavy cream and minced garlic. Pour this mixture evenly over the potatoes and onions to infuse them with creamy garlic flavor.
  4. Add Cheese Layers: Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese and grated Parmesan over the cream-soaked layer. Repeat layering potatoes, onions, seasoning, cream mixture, and cheeses until all ingredients are used, ensuring the final layer is cheese on top.
  5. Cook Slowly: Cover the crockpot and cook on low for 4 to 5 hours or on high for 2 to 3 hours, until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.
  6. Broil for a Golden Top: For a beautiful golden crust, transfer the cooked potatoes to an ovenproof dish if necessary, then broil in the oven for 2 to 3 minutes. Watch carefully to avoid burning.
  7. Rest and Serve: Let the dish rest for 5 to 10 minutes to allow flavors to meld and the dish to set before serving.

Notes

  • Use russet potatoes for the best texture and creaminess in this dish.
  • Thinly slice potatoes and onions evenly for uniform cooking.
  • If your slow cooker insert is not oven-safe, transfer to a separate broiler-safe dish before broiling.
  • You can adjust the cheese quantities or types according to your preference.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated and gently reheated.
