Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced (about 2 cups)
- 1 package (16 ounces) potato gnocchi, uncooked
Seasonings & Liquids
- ¼ cup (60 g) red wine
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 ½ cups (360 g) beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
For Topping & Garnish
- 1 ½ cups (169.5 g) Gruyère cheese, shredded
- Parsley, for garnish
Instructions
- Caramelize the Onions: Heat olive oil and butter over medium heat in a large oven-safe skillet. Add the sliced onions and sauté for 15-20 minutes, stirring frequently, until they become very tender and develop a deep caramel color.
- Add Red Wine: When the onions are nearly finished, pour in the red wine and cook until the liquid has fully evaporated, letting the onions absorb the flavor.
- Season: Sprinkle in the kosher salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Stir well to evenly season the onions.
- Add Broth & Worcestershire: Pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Stir everything together, then bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
- Cook the Gnocchi: Reduce the heat to low, then add the uncooked gnocchi straight into the skillet. Simmer for 3–5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the gnocchi are tender and cooked through.
- Add Cheese & Broil: Sprinkle shredded Gruyère evenly over the gnocchi mixture. Transfer the skillet under the broiler and broil for 2–3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and lightly browned.
- Garnish & Serve: Remove the skillet from the oven. Top with fresh parsley and serve immediately for a cozy, melty meal.
Notes
- If your skillet isn’t oven-safe, transfer the mixture to a baking dish before broiling.
- Vegetarians can substitute vegetable broth and omit Worcestershire sauce or use a vegetarian alternative.
- White wine can be used in place of red wine for a slightly lighter flavor.
- For extra richness, add a touch more butter when caramelizing the onions.
- Keep a close eye under the broiler—cheese can brown quickly!
