French Onion Gnocchi is a savory main course that brings together the classic, caramelized richness of French onion soup with pillowy potato gnocchi, all topped with a golden broil of Gruyère cheese. This recipe is perfect for a comforting, skillet-cooked dinner that can be ready in under 40 minutes.

  • Total Time: 38 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced (about 2 cups)
  • 1 package (16 ounces) potato gnocchi, uncooked

Seasonings & Liquids

  • ¼ cup (60 g) red wine
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 ½ cups (360 g) beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

For Topping & Garnish

  • 1 ½ cups (169.5 g) Gruyère cheese, shredded
  • Parsley, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions: Heat olive oil and butter over medium heat in a large oven-safe skillet. Add the sliced onions and sauté for 15-20 minutes, stirring frequently, until they become very tender and develop a deep caramel color.
  2. Add Red Wine: When the onions are nearly finished, pour in the red wine and cook until the liquid has fully evaporated, letting the onions absorb the flavor.
  3. Season: Sprinkle in the kosher salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Stir well to evenly season the onions.
  4. Add Broth & Worcestershire: Pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Stir everything together, then bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
  5. Cook the Gnocchi: Reduce the heat to low, then add the uncooked gnocchi straight into the skillet. Simmer for 3–5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the gnocchi are tender and cooked through.
  6. Add Cheese & Broil: Sprinkle shredded Gruyère evenly over the gnocchi mixture. Transfer the skillet under the broiler and broil for 2–3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and lightly browned.
  7. Garnish & Serve: Remove the skillet from the oven. Top with fresh parsley and serve immediately for a cozy, melty meal.

Notes

  • If your skillet isn’t oven-safe, transfer the mixture to a baking dish before broiling.
  • Vegetarians can substitute vegetable broth and omit Worcestershire sauce or use a vegetarian alternative.
  • White wine can be used in place of red wine for a slightly lighter flavor.
  • For extra richness, add a touch more butter when caramelizing the onions.
  • Keep a close eye under the broiler—cheese can brown quickly!
