Ingredients
Cake:
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 cup molasses
- 1 large egg
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp ground ginger
- 1/4 tsp ground cloves
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup hot water
Frosting:
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×9 inch baking pan.
- Mix Wet Ingredients: Melt butter and mix with brown sugar, molasses, and egg.
- Combine Ingredients: Whisk dry ingredients and then combine with wet ingredients. Add hot water and mix until smooth.
- Bake: Pour batter into the pan and bake for 30-35 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely.
- Make Frosting: Beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla. Spread over cooled cake.
