Ingredients
For Frying
- 4 cups vegetable or canola oil
For Batter
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 ½ cups milk
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
For Serving
- Confectioner’s sugar or other toppings
Instructions
- Heat the Oil: Heat vegetable or canola oil in a deep pot to about 375°F (190°C), ensuring it’s hot enough for frying.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt until fully combined.
- Add Wet Ingredients: Whisk in the milk, eggs, and vanilla extract until the batter becomes smooth with no lumps.
- Prepare for Frying: Pour the batter into a funnel, squeeze bottle, or cake decorating piping bag fitted with a round tip for easy swirling.
- Fry the Funnel Cakes: Once the oil is hot, swirl the batter in a spiral pattern into the oil. Fry the dough until the underside turns golden brown, then carefully flip to cook the other side until golden as well.
- Drain and Serve: Remove the funnel cake from the oil and place on paper towels to drain excess oil. Immediately dust with confectioner’s sugar or your favorite toppings, and serve hot. Keep cooked funnel cakes warm in the oven if frying in batches.
Notes
- Make sure the oil temperature stays around 375°F for optimal frying and crispy texture.
- Use a funnel, squeeze bottle, or piping bag for easier batter swirling and consistent shapes.
- Keep cooked funnel cakes warm in the oven at low heat if making multiple batches.
- Try toppings like fresh fruit, chocolate sauce, or whipped cream for variety.
