This homemade teriyaki sauce is a simple and flavorful condiment that elevates dishes like chicken, broccoli, and meatballs. Made with basic pantry ingredients, it offers a fresh alternative to store-bought sauces, providing a perfect balance of sweet and savory with ginger and garlic undertones.

  • Total Time: 12 minutes
  • Yield: 2 cups

Ingredients

Teriyaki Sauce Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 ¼ cups cold water
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup soy sauce or tamari
  • 2 teaspoons honey
  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Mix the Cornstarch and Water: In a medium bowl, combine the 3 tablespoons of cornstarch with 1 ¼ cups of cold water. Whisk together until the cornstarch is fully dissolved, creating a smooth slurry.
  2. Add Remaining Ingredients: Whisk in ½ cup brown sugar, ½ cup soy sauce or tamari, 2 teaspoons honey, ½ teaspoon ground ginger, and ½ teaspoon garlic powder into the cornstarch mixture until well blended.
  3. Simmer the Sauce: Pour the combined mixture into a small saucepan and bring it to a simmer over medium-high heat, stirring frequently to avoid burning.
  4. Thicken the Sauce: Once simmering, reduce the heat to medium and cook the sauce, stirring constantly, until it thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon, about 5 minutes. Note that the sauce will continue to thicken as it cools.

Notes

  • Use tamari instead of soy sauce for a gluten-free alternative.
  • Adjust the amount of honey or brown sugar to increase or decrease sweetness according to taste.
  • Store the sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
  • Reheat gently before using to restore the sauce’s consistency.
  • Try adding fresh minced garlic or ginger for a more intense flavor.
