Ingredients
Citrus Fruits
- 1 small orange (add 1-2 more oranges for added sweetness or omit and add another lemon for less sweetness)
- 2 small lemons (add 1-2 more lemons for more acidity or reduce by half and add another orange for less acidity)
Fresh Roots
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh turmeric (peeling optional)
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh ginger (peeling optional)
Other
- 1/8 tsp fresh black pepper
- 1/4 tsp oil such as extra virgin olive oil (optional, helps improve turmeric absorption)
Instructions
- Prepare the Fruits and Roots: If using a juicer like the Hurom, peel the orange and lemons as recommended. Chop the fresh turmeric and ginger into small pieces to facilitate juicing or blending.
- Juicing Method: Add the orange, lemon, turmeric, and ginger to a juicer. Juice the ingredients to extract the liquid. If using a blender instead, proceed to the next step.
- Blending Method: Place chopped turmeric and ginger into a high-speed blender such as a Nutribullet. Add the freshly squeezed juice of the orange and lemons to the blender to make blending easier and to remove pulp and rind. Blend on high speed for approximately 30 seconds.
- Strain the Mixture: Pour the blended or juiced mixture through a thin clean dish towel, a fine mesh strainer, or a nut milk bag to remove any remaining pulp. Use gloves or be cautious as turmeric can permanently stain surfaces and skin.
- Add Final Ingredients: Stir in the fresh black pepper and optional oil, which enhances turmeric absorption and adds a subtle richness.
- Serve: Divide the wellness shot evenly between serving glasses. Enjoy immediately for maximum potency and flavor, topping with a fresh crack of black pepper if desired.
- Storage: Store any leftover shots in a covered container in the refrigerator. Consume within 24 hours, as freshness and nutritional benefits decline over time.
- Use Leftover Pulp: Compost the leftover pulp, freeze it into ice cubes to add to smoothies later, or refrigerate it to steep into other tonics like ginger turmeric tonic.
Notes
- For sweeter shots, add more oranges; for a more acidic punch, add more lemons.
- Peeling turmeric and ginger is optional but can reduce bitterness and fiber in the juice.
- Adding a small amount of healthy oil, such as extra virgin olive oil, can improve absorption of turmeric’s active compounds.
- Fresh black pepper significantly enhances the bioavailability of turmeric curcumin.
- Turmeric can stain cutting boards, countertops, and clothing, so clean tools promptly and consider wearing gloves when handling.
- Best consumed immediately to get the most nutritional benefits, but can be refrigerated for up to 24 hours.
- Use leftover pulp creatively to minimize waste.
