Ingredients
For the Cocktail
- 5–6 fresh mint leaves
- 3 oz passion fruit juice
- 1 oz light rum
- 0.5 oz lime juice (freshly squeezed)
- 0.5 oz triple sec
- 0.25 oz simple syrup (or orgeat, optional)
- Ice (for shaking and serving)
For Finishing
- 1 oz dark rum
- Extra mint sprigs, for garnish
- Half a passion fruit, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Build the Base: Add the mint leaves to a cocktail shaker. Gently muddle them to release their aroma, then fill the shaker with ice.
- Mix the Ingredients: Pour in the passion fruit juice, light rum, lime juice, triple sec, and simple syrup (or orgeat if using). Shake vigorously for about 15 seconds to thoroughly chill and mix.
- Strain the Drink: Strain the cocktail into a rocks glass filled with fresh ice, discarding the used mint and ice from the shaker.
- Float the Dark Rum: Slowly pour the dark rum over the back of a spoon onto the top of the drink to create a layered effect.
- Garnish and Serve: Garnish with extra mint sprigs and, if desired, half a passion fruit. Serve immediately and enjoy!
Notes
- You can swap out the simple syrup for orgeat for a more traditional Mai Tai flavor profile.
- Use fresh-squeezed lime juice for best results.
- Adjust the sweetness by adding more or less simple syrup, depending on your taste or the natural sweetness of your passion fruit juice.
- For a lighter drink, add a splash of soda water at the end.
