Delicious and crispy Pizza Pinwheels made with puff pastry, tomato paste, melted cheese, and aromatic Italian herbs. Perfect as a tasty appetizer or party snack that everyone will love.

  • Total Time: 50 minutes
  • Yield: 20 pinwheels

Ingredients

Pastry

  • 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed

Filling

  • 8 Tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 Tbsp dried mixed Italian herbs
  • Salt & pepper, to taste
  • 2 cups shredded cheese, cheddar or pizza mix

Finishing

  • 2 Tbsp whole milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven & Prepare Tray: Preheat your oven to 200°C (390°F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside to prepare for baking the pinwheels.
  2. Prepare Pastry: Place one sheet of thawed puff pastry on a large cutting board. Spread 4 tablespoons of tomato paste evenly over the pastry surface. Scatter 1 cup of shredded cheese evenly on top, then sprinkle with 1 tablespoon of dried Italian herbs. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Roll and Cut: Carefully roll the pastry from one edge to the other, forming a tight log. Using a sharp knife, slice the log into pinwheels about 1 inch (2 to 3 cm) thick. Arrange the pinwheels flat on the prepared baking sheet, spaced slightly apart.
  4. Brush with Milk: Lightly brush the tops of the pinwheels with 1 tablespoon of whole milk to help achieve a golden and glossy finish during baking.
  5. Repeat for Second Sheet: Repeat the spreading, filling, rolling, slicing, and brushing process with the second sheet of thawed puff pastry using the remaining ingredients.
  6. Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 25 to 35 minutes or until the pinwheels are puffed up, golden brown, and crispy on the outside.
  7. Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and allow the pinwheels to cool slightly on the tray. Serve warm immediately, or cool completely and store in an airtight container for later enjoyment.

Notes

  • Make sure puff pastry is fully thawed before starting for easy rolling and even cooking.
  • You can substitute the tomato paste with pizza sauce if preferred for a saucier filling.
  • Cheese blend options like mozzarella mixed with cheddar work great for melty texture and flavor.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, and reheat in the oven to retain crispiness.
  • For a spicier version, add a pinch of chili flakes to the tomato paste layer before rolling.
