Ready in just 20 minutes, this easy snack or side dish offers a delicious crunchy bite with a hint of spice and vibrant garnished spring onions.

  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

Chips and Vegetables

  • 1 pound frozen chips
  • 1 medium onion, cut into 2 cm chunks
  • 1 red bell pepper, cut into 2 cm chunks
  • 1 green bell pepper, cut into 2 cm chunks

Seasoning and Garnish

  • 1 tablespoon neutral oil (e.g. vegetable or canola oil)
  • 1 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon red chili flakes
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • Spring onion, sliced, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat Air Fryer and Prepare Vegetables: Preheat your air fryer to 200°C (392°F). Cut the onion and both red and green bell peppers into roughly 2 cm chunks to ensure even cooking alongside the chips.
  2. Combine Ingredients in the Basket: Place the frozen chips into the air fryer basket. Add the prepared onion, red and green bell peppers, and drizzle with 1 tablespoon of neutral oil. Sprinkle the Chinese five-spice, garlic powder, red chili flakes, salt, and ground black pepper over the contents.
  3. Toss to Coat: Gently toss everything together within the air fryer basket until the chips and vegetables are evenly coated with the oil and spice mixture, ensuring flavor balance throughout.
  4. Air Fry Until Crispy and Softened: Cook for 15 minutes at 200°C, shaking the basket once or twice during cooking. The chips should turn deep golden with crisp edges while the peppers and onions soften, developing blistered and slightly charred patches for extra taste.
  5. Serve with Garnish: Transfer the cooked chips and vegetables to a serving bowl or plate. Toss again lightly to redistribute the seasoning evenly, then sprinkle with freshly sliced spring onions for a fresh, vibrant garnish. Serve immediately for best texture and flavor.

Notes

  • Shake the air fryer basket halfway through cooking to ensure even crisping and prevent burning.
  • Use a neutral oil with a high smoke point, such as canola or vegetable oil, for best results.
  • Adjust the chili flakes according to your preferred spice level.
  • Serve immediately to retain the crispiness of the chips.
  • You can substitute frozen chips with fresh potato fries, but cooking time may vary.
