These Apple Cheddar Biscuits are a delightful blend of sharp cheddar cheese and sweet, crisp apples baked into tender, flaky drop biscuits. Perfect for breakfast or brunch, they combine savory and fruity flavors in a quick and easy recipe that yields golden, fluffy biscuits with a comforting homemade touch.

  • Total Time: 21 minutes
  • Yield: 9 biscuits

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup cold buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled slightly

Mix-ins

  • 3/4 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 3/4 cup chopped apples (preferably Honeycrisp)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 475°F (246°C). Line a large baking sheet with a Silpat baking mat or parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, granulated sugar, and kosher salt. Set this dry mixture aside.
  3. Combine Wet Ingredients: In a medium bowl, stir together the cold buttermilk and the slightly cooled melted butter using a spatula until combined. The mixture may appear lumpy, which is normal.
  4. Form Biscuit Batter: Pour the buttermilk mixture into the dry ingredients and stir gently with a rubber spatula until just combined and the batter pulls away from the sides of the bowl. Avoid overmixing for tender biscuits. Carefully fold in the shredded sharp cheddar cheese and chopped apples.
  5. Shape Biscuits: Lightly grease a ¼-cup dry measuring cup. Use it to scoop and drop biscuit batter onto the prepared baking sheet. The biscuits should be roughly 2 1/4 inches in diameter and 1 1/4 inches high. Space them about 1 1/2 inches apart. The shape doesn’t need to be perfect, as these are rustic drop biscuits.
  6. Bake: Place the baking sheet on the middle rack of the preheated oven. Bake the biscuits for 12 to 14 minutes, or until their tops turn golden brown.
  7. Cool and Serve: Transfer the baked biscuits to a wire rack and let them cool for 5 minutes. Serve warm, optionally drizzled with honey for a sweet contrast.

Notes

  • For best results, use cold buttermilk and slightly cooled melted butter to help create a tender texture.
  • Do not overmix the batter to avoid tough biscuits; mix just until combined.
  • Honeycrisp apples provide a nice balance of sweetness and tartness; other apple varieties can be substituted depending on preference.
  • These biscuits are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
  • Reheat leftovers gently in the oven to maintain texture.
