A classic Italian Caprese Salad featuring fresh tomatoes, creamy mozzarella, and fragrant basil, drizzled with olive oil and finished with a touch of balsamic glaze. This simple, fresh dish is perfect as a light appetizer or side salad and can be prepared in just 10 minutes.

  • Total Time: 10 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

Salad Ingredients

  • 4 medium tomatoes
  • 1 lb fresh mozzarella
  • 1 bunch fresh basil

Dressing

  • 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
  • ¼ tsp coarse salt
  • ¼ tsp coarse ground black pepper
  • 2 tsp balsamic glaze (optional)

Instructions

  1. Slice Tomatoes and Mozzarella: Slice the tomatoes and fresh mozzarella into 1/4 inch thick slices to ensure even layering and balanced flavors.
  2. Prepare Basil: To chiffonade the basil, stack five or six basil leaves, roll them tightly, then slice them into thin strips, creating delicate ribbons of basil.
  3. Arrange Salad: On a serving platter, arrange the tomato and mozzarella slices alternating. Tuck whole fresh basil leaves between some slices and sprinkle the basil strips on top for extra aroma and flavor.
  4. Add Dressing: Drizzle the extra-virgin olive oil evenly over the salad. Sprinkle with coarse salt and ground black pepper to season. For a touch of sweetness and extra depth, finish with an optional drizzle of balsamic glaze.

Notes

  • Use ripe but firm tomatoes for the best texture.
  • Fresh mozzarella should be drained and patted dry to avoid excess moisture.
  • Balsamic glaze adds sweetness but can be omitted for a lighter salad.
  • Serve immediately to enjoy the fresh flavors at their peak.
  • Can be paired with crusty bread or served as a side dish to grilled meats.
