A classic Italian Caprese Salad featuring fresh mozzarella, ripe tomatoes, and basil leaves, topped with a homemade balsamic reduction dressing. This quick and easy recipe can be prepared in just 10 minutes, making it a perfect fresh appetizer or light meal for any occasion.

  • Total Time: 16 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

Salad

  • 8 ounces fresh mozzarella, sliced, torn, or cut into bite-sized pieces
  • pounds ripe tomatoes, sliced, or cut into bite-sized pieces
  • ¼ cup fresh basil leaves
  • Flaky salt, to taste
  • Freshly cracked black pepper, to taste

Balsamic Reduction Dressing

  • ⅓ cup balsamic vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons packed light brown sugar
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

Instructions

  1. Arrange the tomatoes and cheese: On a large serving platter, arrange the mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil leaves, alternating and overlapping pieces as desired to create an attractive presentation.
  2. Make the balsamic reduction: In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the balsamic vinegar and brown sugar. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to medium-low. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the liquid has reduced by half and thickened enough to coat the back of a spoon, approximately 6 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool for 10 minutes to slightly thicken further.
  3. Prepare the salad dressing: Transfer the cooled balsamic reduction to a jar with a tight-fitting lid. Add the minced garlic and pour in the extra-virgin olive oil. Seal the lid securely and shake vigorously until the dressing is well emulsified. Alternatively, transfer the reduction to a bowl and whisk in the olive oil and garlic until combined and emulsified.
  4. Dress the salad: Drizzle the prepared dressing evenly over the arranged salad. Season with flaky salt and freshly cracked black pepper to taste.
  5. Serve immediately: Present the Caprese salad right away to enjoy the fresh flavors and textures at their best.

Notes

  • Use ripe, in-season tomatoes for the best flavor and sweetness.
  • Fresh mozzarella can be sliced or torn depending on your preference and presentation style.
  • Allow the balsamic reduction to cool before mixing with olive oil to prevent breaking the emulsion.
  • Serve immediately after dressing to maintain the freshness of the basil and mozzarella.
  • For a variation, add a sprinkle of pine nuts or a drizzle of pesto on top.
