Ingredients
Mushrooms and Onions
- 8 ounces baby bella mushrooms, sliced 1/4-1/2 inch thick (can substitute white mushrooms)
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
Cooking Essentials
- 1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 1/2 tablespoons butter
- 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper (or to taste)
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
Garnish
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely chopped
Instructions
- Clean the Mushrooms: Lightly rinse the mushrooms to remove dirt using a spray nozzle or by quickly plunging them in a bowl of room temperature water. Immediately transfer the mushrooms to a clean cotton towel and dry them thoroughly to avoid excess moisture which impairs caramelization.
- Prepare Onions and Mushrooms: Peel and thinly slice the onion. After drying, slice the mushrooms between 1/4 to 1/2 inch thickness or to your preference.
- Heat Skillet with Oils: Over medium to medium-high heat, warm a large skillet and add olive oil and butter. Once the butter has melted and dispersed, it creates a flavorful base for cooking.
- Cook Mushrooms and Onions: Add the sliced mushrooms to the skillet in as close to a single layer as possible. Scatter the sliced onions evenly over the mushrooms. Let them sauté uncovered without stirring for about 3-4 minutes to allow for caramelization on the bottom.
- Season and Stir: When the bottoms turn golden brown, season with salt and pepper and add the Worcestershire sauce. Stir well to combine all the flavors.
- Finish Cooking: Reduce heat to medium-low or low, and continue cooking for an additional 3-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until mushrooms reach the desired color and onions become tender.
- Serve: Taste for seasoning and adjust salt if needed. Remove from heat and garnish with freshly chopped parsley. Serve immediately for best flavor.
Notes
- Dry mushrooms thoroughly after washing to prevent steaming and ensure proper caramelization.
- You can substitute baby bella mushrooms with white button mushrooms if preferred.
- Cooking time may vary depending on your stove and pan, so keep an eye to avoid burning.
- Adding Worcestershire sauce adds umami depth; omit for vegetarian or vegan modification.
- This dish pairs perfectly with grilled meats, roasted vegetables, or can be used as a topping for steaks or burgers.
