Ingredients
Filling
- 8 ounces crab meat (or chopped imitation crab)
- 8 ounces cream cheese (softened)
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 3 tablespoons sliced green onions (plus more for garnish)
Assembly
- 20 wonton wrappers
- 1 egg (beaten)
For Frying
- Oil for frying (enough to fill 4 inches in a deep pan)
Serving
- Dipping sauce of choice (such as sweet and sour sauce, soy sauce, or duck sauce)
Instructions
- Prepare the filling: In a medium bowl, combine the crab meat, softened cream cheese, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and 3 tablespoons of sliced green onions. Stir thoroughly until all ingredients are evenly mixed.
- Fill wontons: Lay a wonton wrapper flat on a clean surface. Spoon approximately 2 teaspoons of the crab mixture into the center of the wrapper. Using a brush or your finger, lightly brush the edges of the wrapper with the beaten egg to aid sealing.
- Shape wontons: Bring two opposite corners of the wrapper together above the filling and pinch firmly to seal. Then bring the remaining two corners together and pinch again to form a sealed package resembling a small purse or pouch.
- Repeat assembly: Continue filling and shaping the remaining wonton wrappers with the crab mixture until all are prepared.
- Heat oil for frying: Pour oil into a deep pan until it reaches about 4 inches in depth. Heat the oil to 350°F (175°C), ensuring it’s hot enough for frying but not smoking.
- Fry the wontons: Carefully place 5 to 6 wontons at a time into the hot oil. Fry for approximately 3 to 5 minutes, turning them occasionally to ensure they turn golden brown and crisp evenly on all sides.
- Drain excess oil: Using a slotted spoon or tongs, remove the fried wontons and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain off excess oil.
- Serve: Arrange the crab rangoon on a serving plate, garnish with additional sliced green onions, and serve immediately alongside your preferred dipping sauce.
Notes
- Ensure the cream cheese is softened to easily combine with the crab meat and other ingredients.
- Do not overfill the wonton wrappers to prevent bursting during frying.
- Maintain oil temperature around 350°F to achieve a crisp exterior without absorbing too much oil.
- Use fresh green onions for garnish to add a fresh, mild onion flavor and color contrast.
- Great served with dipping sauces like sweet and sour, soy sauce, or duck sauce.
- Leftovers can be reheated in an oven or air fryer to retain crispness.
