Ingredients
For the Beef Patties
- 1 pound ground beef
- ½ cup onion, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 large egg
- ½ cup panko bread crumbs
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt, to taste
- Black pepper, to taste
For the Mushroom Gravy
- ¼ cup butter (½ stick)
- ½ cup mushrooms, finely chopped
- ¼ cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- Salt and pepper, to taste
To Serve
- 4 cups cooked jasmine rice
- 4 large eggs (fried sunny side up or over easy)
- ½ cup green onions, chopped
Instructions
- Prepare the Rice: Cook the jasmine rice according to package instructions before starting the beef patties preparation to ensure it’s ready to serve.
- Make the Beef Patties: In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, finely chopped onions, garlic powder, egg, panko bread crumbs, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly until well combined.
- Shape the Patties: Form the beef mixture into 4 equal patties, each about ½ to ¾ inch thick for even cooking.
- Cook the Patties: Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the beef patties for 4–5 minutes on each side or until they reach your preferred doneness. Remove from skillet and keep warm by covering with foil. Clean the skillet after cooking.
- Sauté Mushrooms: In the cleaned skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add finely chopped mushrooms and sauté for 5–6 minutes until tender and flavorful.
- Make the Roux: Sprinkle flour evenly over the sautéed mushrooms and butter. Stir continuously for 1–2 minutes to cook the flour, creating a blond roux base for the gravy.
- Add Liquids: Slowly pour in beef broth while stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Stir in Worcestershire sauce and soy sauce, blending all flavors together.
- Simmer the Gravy: Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer and cook for about 5 minutes until the gravy thickens, stirring occasionally. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Fry the Eggs: In a separate pan, fry the eggs sunny side up or over easy, depending on your preference, to top each loco moco serving.
- Assemble the Dish: Divide the cooked jasmine rice among 4 plates. Top each with a beef patty, generously spoon mushroom gravy over the patties, then place a fried egg on top. Garnish with chopped green onions for a fresh finish.
Notes
- Use freshly cooked rice for best texture and flavor.
- Adjust the seasoning in the beef patties and gravy according to your taste.
- For a richer gravy, you can add a splash of heavy cream or milk after simmering.
- Make sure the skillet is clean after cooking patties to get a smooth gravy without burnt bits.
- Cooking eggs over easy or sunny side up allows the yolk to mix with the gravy and rice for authentic loco moco experience.
