Ingredients
Vegetables
- 8 oz. baby bella mushrooms, sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, sliced
- 1 yellow onion, sliced
Dairy & Fats
- 4 Tbsp butter (divided)
- 2 Tbsp cooking oil (divided)
- 6 slices provolone cheese
Protein
- 12-14 oz. shaved beef steak
Condiments & Seasonings
- ¾ tsp salt
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp freshly cracked black pepper
- 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
Bread
- 5 hoagie rolls
Instructions
- Prep the veggies: Start by slicing the green bell pepper, onion, and baby bella mushrooms. Set them aside for cooking.
- Sauté the mushrooms: Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add 1 Tbsp of butter and 1 Tbsp of cooking oil. Once hot, add the sliced mushrooms and cook for 2-3 minutes until they begin to soften.
- Soften the onions and peppers: Add the sliced onions and bell peppers to the skillet with the mushrooms. Stir and cook for another 3 minutes until all the vegetables have softened. Remove the vegetables from the skillet and set aside.
- Cook the beef: In the same skillet, add another 1 Tbsp butter and 1 Tbsp cooking oil. Add the shaved beef steak and cook over medium heat until browned and cooked through.
- Combine ingredients: Return the sautéed vegetables to the skillet with the cooked beef. Add salt, garlic powder, black pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir everything together and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes to heat through and combine flavors.
- Melt the cheese: Arrange the provolone cheese slices evenly over the steak and vegetable mixture in the skillet. Turn the heat off and let the residual heat melt the cheese.
- Toast the hoagie rolls: While the beef is cooking or the cheese is melting, preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Spread the remaining 2 Tbsp of softened butter inside the hoagie rolls, place them on a baking sheet, and toast in the oven for a few minutes until golden brown. Watch closely to avoid burning.
- Assemble the sandwiches: Fill each toasted hoagie roll evenly with the cheesy steak and vegetable mixture. Add optional toppings like mayo, shredded lettuce, tomato, or sliced jalapeños if desired. Serve immediately and enjoy!
Notes
- For a spicier kick, add sliced jalapeños or hot sauce to your sandwich.
- Choose a good quality shaved beef or ribeye for the best texture and flavor.
- Provolone cheese melts best and gives this sandwich its classic taste, but you can substitute with American or mozzarella cheese if preferred.
- Make sure to toast the hoagie rolls well for added crunch and flavor contrast.
- Use fresh vegetables for optimal taste and freshness.
