Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 1 loaf of bread
- 8 large eggs
- 1 1/2 cups whole milk
- 2/3 cup heavy whipping cream
- 1/4 cup maple syrup
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 3/4 cup chopped pecans
Topping
- 1/2 cup whole pecans
Glaze
- 3 Tbsp unsalted butter
- 3 Tbsp maple syrup
- 1/3 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tsp heavy whipping cream
Instructions
- Prepare the bread: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Slice the bread loaf into even 1-inch pieces to ensure uniform baking and soaking.
- Make the egg mixture: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy whipping cream, maple syrup, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon until fully combined. Stir in the chopped pecans to incorporate some crunch within the casserole.
- Combine: Arrange the bread cubes evenly in a deep casserole dish. Pour the egg mixture over the bread, gently tossing or pressing down to make sure each piece is well coated and soaked. Sprinkle the whole pecans evenly on top for a crunchy topping.
- Bake: Cover the casserole dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Then remove the foil and continue baking for another 15–20 minutes, or until the casserole is golden brown on top and the custard is set in the center.
- Make the glaze: While the casserole bakes, melt the unsalted butter and maple syrup together in a small saucepan over low heat. Remove from heat and whisk in the powdered sugar and heavy whipping cream until the glaze is smooth, thick, and pourable.
- Glaze: Once the French toast casserole is out of the oven and still warm, drizzle the maple glaze evenly over the top for extra sweetness and shine.
- Serve and enjoy: Slice the casserole, serve warm, and enjoy a decadent breakfast treat with your family or friends.
Notes
- Use day-old or slightly stale bread for best soaking results without becoming too soggy.
- Feel free to substitute pecans with walnuts or almonds if preferred.
- For a richer dish, use whole or half-and-half milk instead of skim.
- Glaze can be made ahead and reheated gently before drizzling.
- If you want to prepare in advance, assemble the casserole the night before, cover, and refrigerate before baking in the morning.
