Gnocchi alla Sorrentina is a traditional Italian dish featuring tender potato gnocchi baked in a rich tomato sauce with garlic, fresh basil, and melted mozzarella cheese, topped with parmesan for a flavorful and comforting meal perfect for any occasion.

  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

Sauce

  • 1 Tablespoon olive oil
  • 4 Cloves garlic (large, minced)
  • 28 Ounces canned tomatoes (San Marzano or similar good quality)
  • ¼ Teaspoon salt
  • ⅛ Teaspoon black pepper (freshly ground)
  • ½ Cup fresh basil leaves (torn or roughly chopped)

Main

  • 1 Pound gnocchi (fresh)
  • 8 Ounces fresh mozzarella cheese (cut or torn into ½-inch cubes)
  • ½ Cup parmesan cheese (shredded)

Instructions

  1. Preheat: Preheat the oven to 400°F to prepare for baking the assembled dish.
  2. Sauté garlic: Heat olive oil in a large oven-safe skillet over medium heat for 1 to 2 minutes. Reduce the heat to low, add the minced garlic, and cook gently for about 2 minutes, stirring frequently to avoid burning the garlic.
  3. Add tomatoes and seasoning: Add the canned tomatoes, salt, and freshly ground black pepper to the skillet. Cook on low heat for 8 to 10 minutes, breaking up the whole tomatoes with a spatula or wooden spoon to form a chunky sauce.
  4. Mix in cheese and basil: Stir half of the mozzarella cubes and half of the torn basil leaves into the tomato sauce to incorporate their flavors.
  5. Add gnocchi: Incorporate the fresh gnocchi into the sauce, mixing thoroughly to coat them evenly.
  6. Top with remaining cheese: Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella cubes evenly over the gnocchi, then add half of the shredded parmesan cheese as a topping.
  7. Bake: Transfer the skillet to the preheated oven and bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the mozzarella is melted and beginning to brown on top.
  8. Serve: Remove from oven and garnish with the remaining parmesan cheese and fresh basil leaves. Serve immediately while hot and bubbly.

Notes

  • Using good quality canned tomatoes like San Marzano enhances the sauce flavor.
  • Fresh gnocchi works best for this recipe for the best texture and flavor.
  • An oven-safe skillet allows seamless transfer from stovetop to oven, but a baking dish can be used if preferred.
  • Monitor the baking cheese to prevent over-browning or burning.
  • This dish pairs wonderfully with a light green salad or crusty bread.
