Ingredients
Meat Mixture
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 onion, diced
- 1 bell pepper, diced
- 2 tsp sugar
- 1/4 tsp ground cloves
- 1 tsp yellow mustard
- 1 tbsp white vinegar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 cup ketchup
Assembly
- 1 loaf garlic bread, thawed or Texas toast
- 2 cups cheddar cheese, shredded
Instructions
- Cook the Ground Beef: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef until it becomes crumbly and is almost cooked through. Once done, drain the fat from the skillet and return the meat to the pan.
- Add Vegetables: Add the diced onion and bell pepper to the skillet with the beef. Continue cooking the mixture until the meat is fully cooked and the vegetables become semi-tender, stirring occasionally.
- Simmer with Seasonings: Stir in the sugar, ground cloves, yellow mustard, white vinegar, salt, and ketchup. Reduce the heat to low and allow the mixture to simmer gently for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally to blend all flavors well.
- Prepare the Garlic Bread: Horizontally slice the loaf of garlic bread to create two pieces and place them flat on a baking sheet, ready for topping.
- Assemble the Sloppy Joes: Evenly spread the meat mixture over both pieces of garlic bread. Then, sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese generously over the meat layer.
- Bake to Perfection: Place the baking sheet in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C). Bake for about 15 minutes, or until the cheese has melted into a bubbly, golden layer and the edges of the bread are toasted and crisp.
- Serve: Remove the baking sheet from the oven and slice the garlic bread sloppy joes into desired serving sizes. Serve hot and enjoy!
Notes
- You can substitute the ground beef with ground turkey or plant-based meat for a lighter or vegetarian option.
- For extra flavor, consider adding garlic powder or Italian seasoning to the meat mixture.
- If you like it spicier, add a dash of hot sauce or red pepper flakes to the sauce.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven or microwave.
