This Instant Pot Applesauce recipe is a quick and easy way to make homemade applesauce with minimal prep and cooking time. Using fresh apples combined with lemon juice, water, and optional cinnamon, you pressure cook the mixture for tender, flavorful results. The apples can be peeled or left unpeeled depending on your texture preference, and the applesauce can be mashed or pureed to your desired consistency. Perfect as a healthy snack, side dish, or natural sweetener.

  • Total Time: 22 minutes
  • Yield: About 4 cups

Ingredients

Applesauce Ingredients

  • 3 lbs. apples (about 6-7 medium; Fuji, Gala, Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Delicious)
  • 1 small lemon, juiced
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cinnamon stick or 1/2 – 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apples: Wash the apples thoroughly. If you prefer unpeeled applesauce, quarter the apples, core them, and then cut each quarter in half. For peeled applesauce, first peel the apples, then quarter, core, and halve the quarters.
  2. Fill the Instant Pot: Place the prepared apples into the bottom of the Instant Pot insert. Add the lemon juice, water, and the optional cinnamon stick or ground cinnamon to the pot.
  3. Pressure Cook: Secure the Instant Pot lid and ensure the vent is in the SEALED position. Select the pressure cooker function, set it to HIGH PRESSURE, and adjust the cooking time to 6 minutes.
  4. Natural Pressure Release: Once cooking is complete, allow the pressure to release naturally, which takes about 6 minutes. Afterward, carefully turn the vent to open, being cautious of any remaining steam, and remove the lid. Remove the cinnamon stick if used.
  5. Mash or Puree: For unpeeled apples, use an immersion blender directly in the pot or transfer the mixture to a blender or food processor to puree until smooth. If using peeled apples, mash the applesauce using a potato masher, fork, or slotted spoon until you achieve your preferred texture.

Notes

  • You can mix apple varieties for a more complex flavor.
  • If you prefer a sweeter applesauce, add sweetener like honey or maple syrup after cooking.
  • The applesauce can be served warm or chilled and refrigerated for up to one week.
  • For chunkier applesauce, mash less and avoid pureeing fully.
  • The natural pressure release step is important to avoid splattering and ensure safety.
