A refreshing and vibrant Orange and Red Onion Salad combining the sweet juiciness of oranges with the sharp bite of red onions, enhanced by a simple dressing of olive oil, black pepper, and sea salt. Perfectly quick to prepare and ideal as a light side dish or appetizer.

  • Total Time: 15 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

Fruits

  • 5 medium oranges

Vegetables

  • 1 medium red onion

Condiments & Seasonings

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon fresh cracked black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt (to taste)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Oranges: Peel the oranges carefully using a knife to remove all skin and pith. Then thinly slice the oranges and arrange them evenly on a serving plate or tray.
  2. Slice the Onion: Peel the red onion and slice it thinly. Scatter the onion slices evenly over the arranged orange slices on the plate.
  3. Dress the Salad: Drizzle the olive oil over the orange and onion slices, then sprinkle with fresh cracked black pepper and sea salt to taste. Toss gently if desired.
  4. Rest the Salad (Optional): For best flavor, cover the salad and let it rest in the refrigerator for 2-3 hours to allow the onions to mellow. You can also serve immediately if short on time.
  5. Storage: Store any leftovers in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to three days, but the salad is freshest when eaten the same day it’s made.

Notes

  • Removing all the pith from the oranges ensures the salad isn’t bitter.
  • Allowing the salad to rest enhances the flavor as the onions soften and sweetness of the oranges infuses the dish.
  • This salad pairs well with grilled meats or as a standalone light dish on warm days.
  • Adjust salt and pepper according to your taste preference.
  • Use fresh cracked black pepper for the best flavor impact.
