Ingredients
Base Ingredients
- 1/4 cup butter
- 4 cups mini marshmallows
- 5 cups Rice Krispie cereal
Decoration
- Tootsie Roll Midgies
- Orange food coloring (or red and yellow food coloring to mix)
Instructions
- Melt Butter: Slowly melt the butter in a large saucepan over low heat to avoid burning and create a smooth base for the marshmallows.
- Add Marshmallows: Stir in the mini marshmallows until they are completely melted and combined with the butter, forming a smooth, sticky mixture.
- Add Food Coloring: Remove the marshmallow mixture from the heat and add orange food coloring (or mix red and yellow) until the desired pumpkin-orange color is achieved.
- Mix in Cereal: Add the Rice Krispie cereal to the colored marshmallow mix. Stir well to coat all the cereal evenly. If the saucepan is too small, transfer the cereal to a large bowl and pour the marshmallow mixture over it, then stir.
- Cool Mixture: Allow the coated cereal mixture to cool for a few minutes until it’s cool enough to touch but still pliable.
- Form Pumpkin Shapes: Spray your hands lightly with cooking spray to prevent sticking. Shape the mixture into round balls resembling pumpkins.
- Place on Paper: Place the shaped treats onto wax or parchment paper and set aside.
- Add Pumpkin Stems: Heat Tootsie Roll Midgies in the microwave for 3 seconds to soften. Quickly mold each into a stem shape and attach it to the top of each Rice Krispie treat pumpkin.
Notes
- Use cooking spray on your hands to prevent sticking when shaping the treats.
- If you don’t have orange food coloring, mix red and yellow to achieve a similar color.
- Work quickly when shaping the treats as the marshmallow mixture hardens as it cools.
- Tootsie Roll stems add a charming touch but can be omitted for a simpler version.
- Store treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days for best freshness.
