Ingredients
Sauce and Seasonings
- 1/3 cup hoisin sauce (use 1/2 cup if you prefer more sauce or have closer to 24 ounces of meatballs)
- 3-4 tablespoons reduced sodium soy sauce
- 1-2 tablespoons rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil (or to taste)
- 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger (or to taste)
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder (or to taste)
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (or to taste)
- Red pepper flakes (optional and to taste)
- Salt and pepper (optional and to taste)
Main Ingredient
- 20 ounces turkey meatballs
Garnish
- 1 green onion (trimmed and sliced into thin rounds, using both white and green parts)
- 1 teaspoon sesame seeds (or as desired)
Instructions
- Prepare the Sauce: In a large skillet, combine hoisin sauce, soy sauce, rice vinegar, toasted sesame oil, ground ginger, onion powder, garlic powder, and optional red pepper flakes, salt and pepper. Turn the heat to medium or medium-high and stir well to combine all sauce ingredients evenly.
- Add Meatballs and Simmer: Add the turkey meatballs to the skillet and toss them thoroughly in the sauce to coat evenly. Let them simmer for about 5 minutes until the meatballs are heated through. Taste the sauce at this point and adjust seasoning by adding more hoisin, soy sauce, ginger, garlic, or red pepper flakes if desired for a stronger flavor.
- Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle sliced green onions and sesame seeds evenly over the meatballs. Serve immediately. If preparing for an event and needing to keep warm, transfer the meatballs to a slow cooker and set it to the ‘keep warm’ or lowest heat setting.
Notes
- You can increase the hoisin sauce quantity to 1/2 cup if you like more sauce or are using more meatballs.
- Adjust seasonings like ginger, garlic, and red pepper flakes to your personal preference.
- If serving later, keep warm in a slow cooker to maintain temperature without overcooking.
- Using turkey meatballs keeps this dish lean, but you can substitute with chicken or beef meatballs if preferred.
- For a gluten-free version, ensure the hoisin and soy sauce used are gluten-free.
