Ingredients
Strawberries
- 2 pounds fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
- ½ cup granulated sugar
Cake
- 1 angel food cake, cut into 1-inch cubes
Vanilla Pudding
- 1 batch homemade vanilla pudding or 1 large box instant vanilla pudding (prepared and fully chilled)
Whipped Cream
- 1 batch homemade whipped cream
Instructions
- Macerate the Strawberries: In a medium bowl, combine the sliced strawberries and granulated sugar. Cover the bowl and let the mixture sit for about 30 minutes to allow the strawberries to release their juicy sweetness, enhancing their flavor and softness.
- Prepare the Cake Cubes: Slice the angel food cake lengthwise into three equal rounds. Then cut these rounds into approximately 1-inch cubes, setting them aside for layering.
- Combine Pudding and Whipped Cream: After the vanilla pudding has been fully chilled, gently fold in 1 cup of the homemade whipped cream until it’s fully incorporated, making the pudding lighter and creamier for layering.
- Assemble the Trifle Layers: Begin by placing a layer of angel food cake cubes at the bottom of a trifle dish. Spoon a generous amount of the macerated strawberries along with their juice over the cake. Add a layer of the creamy pudding, followed by an even layer of whipped cream. Repeat the layering sequence with remaining cake, strawberries (saving a few for garnish on top), pudding, and whipped cream.
- Chill Before Serving: Place the assembled trifle in the refrigerator and chill for at least 1 hour to allow the flavors to meld and the layers to set nicely. Serve chilled, garnished with the reserved strawberries on top.
Notes
- For best results, use fresh, ripe strawberries to maximize sweetness and flavor.
- Angel food cake lends a light texture that complements the creamy layers—other sponge cakes can be used as alternatives.
- The pudding can be made from scratch or using a high-quality instant mix.
- Macerating the strawberries with sugar helps create a natural syrup adding moisture and sweetness to the dessert.
- Chilling the trifle for at least an hour enhances the melding of flavors and improves texture.
- This dessert can be assembled a day ahead and refrigerated until serving.
